Fremont NC - William Holmes, 77, works with a pitch fork in his half-acre garden harvesting rows of red potatoes at the corner of Branch and Pender streets in Fremont, Tuesday morning, June 29, 2010. Holmes has had the Fremont garden plot since the mid 1960's. After retiring in 1998 from the Franklin Bakery in Goldsboro the seasoned gardener spends more time every year growing yellow corn, collards, squash and other vegetable varieties, which he occasionally sells or gives to neighbors. Holmes says being in the field in the morning hours before the summer day gets hot makes gardening much more productive and enjoyable. (Photo by Gray Whitley)
