Mount Olive NC - Family matriarch Marie Shaw, at right, wife of Ryland Shaw Sr., speaks of the history and tradition that the Glenn-Martin Drug Co. store was to the town of Mount Olive for over 77 years. Shaw, along with the help of family and other long-time store employees like Elijah Manley, at left, are removing the remaining contents from the Glenn-Martin Drug Co. building, Thursday, August 5, 2010, before the iconic property changes hands to new owners. Ryland Shaw Sr. and Breedlove Shaw were the well-known proprietors of the Center Street store since 1966. The corner drugstore featured a soda shop, milkshakes, ice cream and snack bar, and provided essentials for regular customers who visited the store for prescriptions, local news and conversation. Shaw says she misses the family operated business as it was of great importance to the community and provided a sense of place for the town of Mount Olive. The Glenn-Martin Drug Co. store closed in late August of 2009. (Photo by Gray Whitley)
